​The Board of Education and its educational partners correspond and meet with key educational leaders and municipal and provincial ministries and authorities to raise awareness about policies and decisions that impact students and learning. In partnership, they advocate for a first-class public education system for all students and our local communities.

2015/16 School Year

April 25, 2016- Letter to the Honourable Christy Clark regarding Take Action on Child Poverty

The Powell River Board of Education wrote this letter in support for the recommendations outlined in the 2015 BC Child Poverty Report Card published by First Call: BC Child and Youth Advocacy Coalition.

January 12, 2016 - Letter to the Honourable Mike Bernier regarding MyEd BC

The Powell River Board of Education brought to the attention of the Hon. Mike Bernier, the transitional difficulties encountered since the implementation of MyEd BC this fall.

November 17, 2015 - Letter to Island Timberlands regarding logging around Henderson Elementary and Brooks Secondary Schools

The Powell River Board of Education expressed their concern to Island Timberlands with respect to student safety while they potentially log around Henderson Elementary and Brooks Secondary Schools.

May 19, 2015 - Letter to Minister Fassbender Regarding Bill 11-2015

The Powell River Board of Education, the local teachers' and support worker' unions as well as the District Parent Advisory Council express their concerns with the regard to the potential impact of Bill 11-2015: The Education Statues and Amendment Act, 2015, on the students in our local school district.

December 3, 2014 - Letter to Ministers Fassbender and de Jong regarding Compensation of Exempt Staff

Following the successful completion of negotiations with teachers, the Board urges Minsters Fassbender and de Jong to consider increased compensation for exempt staff.

September 2, 2014 - Letter to President of BCSTA regarding negotiations

The School District 47 Board of Education has submitted a letter to Ms. Teresa Rezansoff, President of the British Columbia School Trustees Association regarding the failed negotiations between the Province and BC Teachers' Federation. The letter in its entirety is attached.

August 25, 2014 - Letter to the Honourable Christy Clark, Premier, and the Honourable Peter Fassbender, Minister of Education 

The Board of Education relayed its disappointment in the ongoing labour dispute, along with measures taken by the provincial government that do not reflect a desire to move forward with negotiations.

August 1, 2014 - Letter to the Honourable Michael de Jong, Minister of Finance.

The Board of Education expressed its shock and disappointment regarding the temporary support payments for parents and families with children under the age of 14.

June 2, 2014 - Letter to Jim Iker, President of the BC Teachers' Federation

The Board of Education encourages the BCTF president to continue to engage in meaningful negotiations with government to help bring an end to the labour dispute.

The Board of Education encourages the Ministry of Education to work hard to engage in meaningful negotiations with the BCTF to help bring an end to the current labour dispute.

May 14, 2014 - Letter to the Honourable Peter Fassbender, Minister of Education

The Board of Education sent a follow-up letter after its Annual BCSTA General Meeting. The letter references the Board's desire to have the Summer Learning funding restored to districts to continue providing summer programming to students at no cost.

The Board of Education sent a follow-up letter after its Annual BCSTA General Meeting. The letter references the discrepancy in providing free ferry passes when travelling for school events for some ferry-bound districts but others not.

November 25, 2013 - Press Release regarding Ferry Reduction Plan

The Board of Education produced a Press Release to display its bewilderment at BC Ferries' decision to cut runs to Powell River and Vancouver Island, restating that those runs are of paramount importance to allow school children and community youth to participate healthy lifestyles.

September 11, 2013 - Letter to the Honourable Peter Fassbender, Minister of Education

The Board of Education sent a letter to the Minster of Education regarding the request to find savings in order to fund CUPE wage increases. The Board expressed its concern regarding the request to continue to find savings without affecting "core services". 

August 29, 2013 - Letter to the BCSTA Board of Directors

The Board of Education expressed its concern to the BCSTA Board of Directors to move to take a seat at the bargaining table. The Board suggested that the matter needed to be debated by the provincial boards, and any movement needed to come as a direct motion.

August 29, 2013 - Letter to the Honourable Peter Fassbender, Minister of Education

The Board of Education sent a letter to the Minister of Education requesting involvement within the bargaining framework with the BCTF. The Board expressed its concern wtih recent changes within BCPSEA, stating a lack of continuation of a co-governance model.

2012/13 School Year

January 14, 2013 - Letter to Ms. Melanie Joy, Chair of BCPSEA

The Board of Education sent a letter to the BCPSEA chair commending the BCTF and BCPSEA on their collaborative work in support of the Agreement in Committee, with hopes of both parties coming to a freely negotiated settlement.

March 13, 2012 - Letter to the Honourable George Abbott, Minister of Education

The Board of Education issued a letter to the Minister of Education reiterating it's support of a mediated rather than legislated end to the labour dispute with the teachers' union.

December 18, 2012 - Letter to the Honourable Don McRae, Minister of Education

The Board of Education sent a letter to the Minister of Education regarding the ministry's Cooperative Gains Mandate that required districts to re-evaluate spending and looking for new sources of savings. In addition to examining board finances, the Board put forward ideas for the Ministry to find savings within ancillary services that do not affect children.
