Philosophy

To enable learners to develop their full potential and to acquire the knowledge, skills and attitudes needed to contribute to a healthy society.
It is the intention of First Nations Support Staff to ensure:
  • That students of Aboriginal Ancestry are given opportunities to learn about and value their identity within the larger society
  • That All students are given opportunity to learn about and value First Nations Culture
  • That First Nations students achieve educational outcomes equivalent to their counterparts

Klahahmen Language

School District No. 47 (Powell River) in consultation with Sliammon Community members have developed a language curriculum from Kindergarten to Grade 12.
The curriculum has been approved by Sliammon Chief and Council and School District Board of Trustees as well as the Ministry of Education. Klahahmen language meets the entry requirement at the University of Victoria and Simon Fraser University.

Home Support

The Home Support Workers are located in three schools and are available to:
  • Meets with students on a regular basis
  • Assists students to improve educational performance
  • Student advocacy
  • Respects confidentiality
  • Monitors attendance and performance
  • Encourages parental participation within the schools setting
  • Ensures that there is continuity of service as may be required by student
  • PALS - Parents as Literacy Supporters
  • Plan extra curricular educational activities for students
School District Individualized Support Programs available:
  • Alt Kore (Grades 10 - 12)
  • On line learning (Grades 10 - 12)
  • Ahms Tah Ow (joint program with Sliammon)

Cultural Activities

Goal: To foster and promote an awareness of Sliammon language and traditions.
Cultural activities are offered to all schools within the School District in the following areas:
  • First Nations Art
  • Drumming/Singing
  • Drum making
  • Beading
  • Moccasin Making
  • Christmas gifts to Sliammon Elders
