Grade 7 Cultural Gathering
On May 1st, Grade 7 Indigenous students from across qathet School District came together at the Outdoor Learning Centre for a Cultural Gathering. This annual event supports Indigenous students as they transition from elementary to high school by creating space to connect with one another and with Indigenous education staff.
The day focused on building relationships, strengthening identity, and fostering a sense of belonging as students prepare for the next stage in their educational journey. Throughout the gathering, students engaged in a range of learning experiences, including a forest game and making strength bracelets (ƛasəm tamoǰɛtən “tla-sum tahmo-jeh-tun”) alongside older Indigenous students in the GIJE (land) program.
Reflecting on the impact of the day, District Principal of Indigenous Education, Jessica Johnson, shared, “This year's Grade 7 Indigenous student gathering was an important reminder of the significance of land, culture, and connection. The Grade 7's were supported by GIJE students who took the lead as peer mentors, sharing both cultural teachings and practical advice for students as they transition to high school. I was deeply proud of the students and the powerful impact of youth showcasing their knowledge and leadership in meaningful ways.”
That sense of connection was echoed by Angela Young, qSD Indigenous Education Team Member, who added, “It’s a special day for Indigenous Grade 7’s to connect to each other and the adults who wrap around them. It’s one of my favourite days!”
Thank you to the qathet School District Indigenous Education Family, Tla'amin Nation Education staff, and the GIJE program students for their mentorship in creating this meaningful experience for Grade 7 students across the district.
