We received a number of messages from parents concerned about the naloxone kits being handed out by the VCH Harm Reduction Awareness program.
Here is the response from VCH.
"Across VCH, we continue to see increases in deaths from overdoses among adults and youth. One of the most impactful strategies to prevent deaths from overdose is the provision of take-home naloxone broadly in the community to prepare people to respond should they encounter someone in need. At last Wednesday's Health Fair, with approval from the school, we distributed take home naloxone kits to high school students who wanted them. We have heard concerns about students unpacking the kits and about risk from the contents. In the future, we will distribute these kits in a more targeted fashion, to ensure full understanding of how best use them safely and appropriately and for their intended purpose – to save lives."
