May 30, 2021

The Powell River Board of Education is reaching out to provide sympathy and condolences to the Tk'emlúps te Secwépemc and all those affected by the horrific finding of children's remains at the former residential school in Kamloops. "This is a reminder that we have to stay vigilant in educating our children about Canada's history and embedding both truth and reconciliation in the daily culture of our schools," said Dr. Jay Yule, Superintendent. "We are lowering our flags to half-mast this week to honour the memory of the Indigenous children found buried at the Kamloops Indian Residential School and for all the children who lost their lives, survivors of residential schools, and their families," said Dale Lawson, Board Chair.  We are committed to helping staff plan for ways to honour the memory of the children who died and ensure that educators have the tools to address teaching about residential schools and foster an understanding of Indigenous histories, worldviews, and perspectives.Image
