International Day Against Homophobia, Biphobia, and Transphobia
International Day Against Homophobia, Biphobia, and Transphobia (IDAHOBIT) is observed each year on May 17th. It commemorates May 17, 1990, when the World Health Organization (WHO) removed homosexuality from its Classification of Diseases, marking an important milestone in recognizing 2SLGBTQIA+ identities as part of human diversity.
Today, IDAHOBIT raises awareness of the discrimination still experienced by 2SLGBTQIA+ communities and promotes dignity, respect, and human rights for all. It is also an opportunity to reflect, learn, and take action toward more inclusive and caring communities that affirm and celebrate sexual and gender diversity.
The 2026 theme, “At the heart of democracy,” is a reminder that truly democratic societies must be grounded in justice, freedom, and equity for everyone. In qathet School District, this means fostering learning environments where every student feels safe, valued, and included. There is no single way to recognize the day, and even small actions can make a meaningful difference.
Some ways to show support include:
- Being visible: Wear rainbow colours or Pride-themed items to show support for 2SLGBTQIA+ students and communities.
- Interrupting the spread of misinformation: common myths spread online and in our shared spaces; address fears with curiosity and push for accountability to evidence-based information
- Spreading awareness: Join conversations online and amplify youth voices advocating for 2SLGBTQIA+ rights.
- Creating welcoming spaces: Display rainbows, flags, or other symbols of Pride and belonging in classrooms and shared spaces.
- Learning and raising awareness: Engage with the stories and experiences of 2SLGBTQIA+ individuals and discuss the history and purpose of IDAHOBIT in age-appropriate ways.
- Empowering students: Support students to build understanding and confidence to recognize, interrupt, and take action against discrimination.
- Sharing information: Post inclusive messages through school or classroom digital platforms.
- Connecting to supports: Ensure students know where to find trusted adults and supportive resources.

However IDAHOBIT is recognized, the message extends beyond a single day: allyship and solidarity with 2SLGBTQIA+ communities matter year-round. Together, we can continue working toward creating inclusive environments where everyone can thrive as themselves and feel a strong sense of belonging.
