Where Life and Learning Meet

Partners in Education (PIE) is a Provincial Online Learning School that allows children to be educated, in part or whole, at sites outside of in-person school campuses.

PIE is a relationship-based school where collaboration between students, home facilitators and teachers is of utmost importance in creating meaningful and engaging individualized Student Learning Plans.

A Unique School Environment

PIE brings together BC-certified teachers, parents, community mentors and students in a flexible and respectful learning community.

At PIE, we:

• See families and teachers working together to support children's learning.
• Build supportive, respectful and trustworthy relationships with all members of our community, both in person and online.
• Collaboratively develop holistic individualized learning programs for every child and an intergenerational learning environment that acknowledges, reflects and celebrates unique interests, passions, quirks, goals and abilities.
• Are flexible in all aspects of our shared educational experiences.
• See and celebrate the immense value of family involvement in student learning.
• Give students ample freedom to pursue their passions in an effort to foster lifelong learning.
• Create and believe in safe and gentle learning environments, because everyone learns best when they feel safe and heard.

Learning at PIE 

For families who have chosen to follow provincial curriculum, PIE offers assistance, direction, and flexibility.

Students and families work with BC-certified teachers to develop individualized Student Learning Plans (SLPs). These plans reflect the student's learning goals and the strategies, resources and activities used to meet provincial learning standards.

For Parents & Caregivers

As the home learning facilitator, you are responsible for facilitating and planning the day-to-day delivery of the curriculum collaboratively decided upon during the initial planning meeting with your child's assigned teacher(s).

This provides an opportunity to tailor learning to your child's abilities and interests, while also coming with the following responsibilities:

• Meet regularly with your child's teacher to collaborate on the creation of an individualized Student Learning Plan (SLP), as well as throughout the year for assessment and planning for the following terms.
• Attend all assessment and planning conferences with your child in September, December, March and June.
• Provide samples of your child's work for assessment three times a year.

For Students Working Independently

Students working independently take on the role of facilitating and planning the day-to-day completion of the curriculum decided upon in their SLP meeting.

The responsibilities for students are similar to those of home learning facilitators and include:

• Meet and/or communicate regularly with your teacher to create your SLP and participate in assessment conferences.
• Provide samples of your work for your teacher to assess.

Enrolment & Learning Expectations

By enrolling in PIE, students and/or parents agree to:

• Develop a Student Learning Plan (SLP) in collaboration with a BC-certified teacher.
• Follow, or have their child(ren) follow, the provincial curriculum.
• Provide work samples for assessment and evaluation by their child's teacher.

Enrolment Options

There are two options for enrolment:

Home-Based Learning: Learning is done primarily at home.

In-Person Opportunities: Students are invited to attend in-person group learning opportunities available in various communities throughout BC. These opportunities are designed to augment the home learning experience.

Inclusive Education

Students with disabilities and diverse abilities are supported by PIE staff in meeting the goals and objectives of their Individual Education Plans (IEPs).

With or without a Ministry-recognized designation, programs can be adapted to meet the needs of individual students.

Students with a Ministry-recognized designation are provided with the opportunity to participate in the development of an IEP and have equitable access to non-categorical resource services, including:

• Learning assistance
• Counselling
• School psychology
• Speech-language pathology
• Physiotherapy
• Occupational therapy

Indigenous Education

Indigenous students at PIE are supported by the qSD Indigenous Education department.

The overarching goal of the Indigenous Education Department is to support the holistic success of Indigenous students through enriched experiences and opportunities.

Learning Resource Funding

Home-Based Learners can access up to $600 in Learning Resource Funding per child to support curriculum-based learning at home and in the community.

Additional resources are available for students with disabilities and diverse abilities to help them meet the goals and objectives of their IEP.

The Inclusive Education Teacher (IET), or case manager, works with each family to create the IEP and plan for supports designed to assist the student in meeting their goals and objectives.
