qSD's Statement Regarding 41 Additional Unmarked Graves Found at Former St. Augustine’s Residential School Site

The qathet School District expresses our deep sorrow and solidarity with the shíshálh Nation, the Tla’amin Nation, and all Nations whose children were taken to St. Augustine’s Residential School.
The confirmation of additional unmarked graves is another painful reminder of the truth that Survivors and their families have carried for generations: many children never made it home.
As a public education system, we have a responsibility to ensure that this truth is never forgotten and that our schools are places where truth, reconciliation, and healing are actively pursued.
The Truth and Reconciliation Commission issued 94 Calls to Action, with Calls 71 to 76 specifically addressing the need for governments and institutions to work with Indigenous communities to locate, document, and commemorate children who died in residential schools. These calls to action emphasize the importance of ensuring families and Nations have access to the records, information, and supports needed in this work of truth-telling and healing.
We stand in solidarity with Indigenous communities and reaffirm our commitment to advancing reconciliation through education, awareness, and action.
