National Indigenous Veterans Day
November 8th is Indigenous Veterans Day, a time to honour the First Nations, Inuit, and Métis people who have a long and proud history of military service to Canada. It is estimated that more than 12,000 Indigenous people served in major conflicts during the 20th century, contributing their skills as snipers and scouts, as well as serving in other unique roles, such as code talkers during the Second World War.
As we honour their courage, service, and sacrifice, we also acknowledge the discrimination many Indigenous veterans experienced, including being denied equal access to veterans’ benefits. Today, we pause and reflect on their contributions, recognize the injustices they faced, and honour the families and communities who continue to carry their stories. We remember with gratitude and respect all Indigenous veterans, and recognize the importance of ensuring their experiences are heard, honoured, and shared with future generations.
