Many Indigenous languages have words – such as t̓əm ǰɛ in ʔayʔajuθəm - that existed long before colonization to express non-binary identity, often indicating a sacred role within communities. Two-Spirit (2S) and Indigiqueer are two terms in English that some Indigenous people use now to speak about their own layered identities.
