Career Pathways Programs

A person’s career is considered their “journey” through life, and K-12 curriculum and other career activities offer students personally meaningful and goal-oriented ways of pursuing this journey.

Career Education curriculum offers students many opportunities to explore and develop personal interests, strengths, and competencies while making connections with experiential learning, career-life possibilities, and preferred post-graduation opportunities. Career Education includes reflection on learning experiences both in school and out of school and facilitates connections with communities and networks to support personal interests and goals.

Learn more about the Career Education curriculum on the Government of BC's website here.

In Kindergarten to Grade 5, career-life development focuses largely on the expanding sense of self, positive community engagement, and reflection on learning and goal setting.

In Grades 6-9, students reflect on and self-assess their development, set goals for personal competency, and identify their strengths and preferences as they explore career-life concepts such as identity, leadership, personal planning, and transferable skills.

In Grades 10-12, students further refine career-life development goals and explore post-graduation possibilities.

Dual Credit Partnerships
qathet School District has partnerships with Vancouver Island University (VIU) and North Island College (NIC), which allows Grade 12 students to take courses to start their transition to post-secondary that are required for a specific career. When students successfully complete a course or program, they earn High School elective credits in addition to post-secondary credits.

The Dual Credit program allows students to begin their transition to post-secondary, experience the difference between High School and post-secondary, and experience the type of work and workload required to pursue their career choice.

Grade 11 students register for available post-secondary courses in their grade 12 year. Applicants must be of school age and not in a position to graduate.

Courses that are eligible to Dual Credit students are available courses chosen from a:

  • Certificate (1 year) Program

  • Diploma (2 year) Program

  • Degree Program

  • Foundation Level 1 Trades Program

Students cannot choose course(s) from more than one program.  The course(s) must lead to a specific career.
