Work Experience (WEX)
Ministry of Education approved Work Experience 12A (WEX12A) and Work Experience 12B (WEX12B) electives are 100–120-hour courses of work-based training in cooperation with the student, school and employer. Through work-based training, students have the opportunity to observe and practice employability skills required in the workplace as well as technical and applied skills that relate to specific occupations and industries.
Who:
Grade 10, 11, 12 students who have completed Career Life Education 10
What:
Work or volunteer, gain experience, earning up to eight Grade 12 elective credits.
- WEX12A = 100 work experience hours = 4 credits
- WEX12B = 100 work experience hours = 4 credits
When:
Outside of school hours, and outside the school premise
Why?
Career Life Education 10, Career Life Connections 12, and Work Experience, support students to:
- Connect classroom learning with the workplace
- Practice resume writing and job interview skills
- Learn workplace skills that are transferable to other employers
- Fulfill community service hours required for graduation
- Be supported to make decisions about career choices
- Build a network of industry contacts
- Increase self-confidence and potential
- Demonstrating knowledge of basic workplace incident and accident response procedures and protocols
- Applying safe work practices on the jobsite and,
- Understanding workplace health and safety rights and responsibilities
How:
Apply Now - Review and complete the Work Experience (WEX) Application, including obtaining employer signatures and passing the Work Safety Test. Complete the first assignment, and gain acceptance into the course.
Meet with Ms. Carlson, Career Pathways Coordinator, to review information and requirements
All WEX12A and WEX12B Courses require that students have WorkSafe Training.
All work placements, whether paid or unpaid, must have Workers Compensation Board (WCB) coverage. Employers must supply their WCB number as evidence of WCB coverage.
Students must complete WEX12A before starting WEX12B. Credit for paid or non-paid work experience that occurred in the past is not permitted. Students must complete and submit a copy of their Training Plan and Safety Checklist prior to enrollment in the course. Failure to do so may result in the inadmissibility of hours worked for credit. Pay stubs may be used to verify work hours but are not a substitute for a written work log.
Receive 4-8 credits on your transcript for the successful completion of the program.
Submit your required approved 30 hours Career Life Connections form to the Career Counselling Centre.
