Dual Credit Courses | Vancouver Island University

VIU in a partnership with qathet School District offer a variety of courses to non-graduated students under the age of 19. Students can learn what it is like to be a University student while in high school. Brooks Secondary students can take up to two Dual Credit courses. qathet School District and VIU will work collaboratively to try and support all your course needs. 

The academic courses that can be taken at VIU as Dual Credit change year to year but will always include a combination of:

  • Eng 115  Writing & Research
  • Eng 125 Literature and Culture
  • Global Studies 100 Global Lens
  • Ind Studies 103  Intro to Ind.
  • Ind Studies 104  Intro to Ind. II
  • Psych 111 Contemporary  I
  • Psych 121 Developmental Psychology
  • SOCI 112 Canadian Society
  • SOCI 112 Selected Topics

Students can check VIU’s timetable to see if the course they would like is being offered.  If students are interested in a course not listed above please check with Mrs. Ellis to see if it is available as a Dual Credit course.

Please be aware that course start dates, times vary and may not align with Brook's timetable. There may be pre-requisites for courses and no transportation is provided.

Where:       

Some courses are at VIU tiwšÉ›mawtxŹ· campus, other are synchronous online delivery, some are online asynchronous and there may be a face-to-face component to the online courses. Students will need to review VIU’s Timetable for more information.

Why:

Students can earn high school elective credits while taking University courses and earning University credits. Students build confidence and skills to support their transition to the Post Secondary Institute of their choice.  

  • Get started on your post secondary education while in Gr 12
  • Tuition costs are covered by qathet School District
  • Transition to post secondary while being supported
  • Lighten your workload for first year of university
  • Make new friends

How:                  

  • Read the Dual Credit Information Package.

  • Apply Now - Review and complete the Dual Credit Application. Gain acceptance into the program.

    • Meet with Mrs. Ellis, Career Pathways Coordinator, to review information package, application, and requirements.

    • VIU Admission Requirements:

      • Successful completion of English 12 minimum “C” grade is required for most courses
  • Pay Fees - This program is valued at over $500. Check the VIU program page for updated fees. qathet School District will cover your tuition only. You are responsible for all other fees (including deposit, application, lab, student, and grad fees; as well as textbooks, and supplies). Visit the VIU program page or contact VIU for updated fees. 

    • A $200 deposit is required to secure your spot in the program. Students withdrawing from the program after acceptance will be subject to a $500 withdrawal fee.

  • Attend all classes. Not adhering to strict university guidelines will result in withdrawal from the program.

  • Assessment will be provided by your VIU instructor according to VIU's reporting period. A final grade will be given on your Brooks Learning Update. Recognizing that university courses expectations can be rigorous, it is strongly recommended that students communicate frequently about their progress with both their VIU Instructor and Brooks Career Pathways Coordinator.

  • Earn credits on your high school transcript and VIU credits on your university transcript for the successful completion of the program.   

  • If required, seek IEP, counselling and student supports through the VIU Student Support Team or through the Brooks Career Counselling Office.
