Hair Program

Trade: Hairstylist

This is an ongoing Grade 11-12 electives-based program (Career Prep Program) that combines a first-class instructional salon with a highly trained instructor, to create the perfect setting for excellence in career education. Our qathet Hairdressing program will get you started towards your Level 1, with the opportunity to start apprenticing and then challenging the Level 1 exam. This program will run full time Tues-Friday, with Mondays off for academic learning through the Brooks flex room. Grade 11: Hairdressing 11A, 11B, 11C and 11D, students will work on theory and work in the salon refining their skills. Grade 12: Hairdressing 12A, 12B, 12C and 12D, students will work on theory and work in the salon refining their skills.

What:                 

4 courses per semester = 16 elective credits 

When:                  

  • September to January
  • Tuesday to Friday, four (4) days per week 
  • 9am to 12pm, 12:45pm to 3:15pm
  • (Mondays @ Brooks to complete graduation credit courses.)

Where:       

Ocenview Education Center in Powell River

Why:                  

  • Build real technical skills early through hands‑on practice in cutting, styling, colouring, and client care.

  • Gain a strong foundation for future training so post‑secondary hairstyling programs feel familiar and easier to excel in.

  • Explore a high‑demand, creative career path while still in high school, helping to confirm your interest before committing to full certification.

How:                  

  • Select 'Hairdressing' Career Prep Program on your Course Selection Sheet and submit to an Academic Advisor in the Brooks Career Counselling Centre.

  • This program is free and is a Brooks Elective.

  • Students are required to provide their own transportation to/from Oceanview Education Centre. Many students use the City Bus.

  • Attend class 5 days per week. Not adhering to attendance guidelines could result in withdrawal from the course.

    • The program is four days per week. You are responsible for attending Brooks at least one day per week to complete academic graduation requirements, which usually involves taking English 12 and Career Life Connections 12. See a Brooks Academic Advisor to determine which courses you require to graduate with a minimum of 80 credits.

  • Receive 16 credits on your transcript for the successful completion of the program. 

  • Participate in Work Experience - consider volunteering or job shadowing to gain more experience in this field. Submit your required approved 30 hours Career Life Connections form to the Career Counselling Centre.  

  • Connect with Hairstylist | SkilledTradesBC to support questions regarding an apprenticeship. 

  • If required, seek IEP, counselling and student supports through the Brooks Career Counselling Office.
