Skills X

What is the Skills X Program?

The program exposes interested students to various construction and mechanical trades as they explore hands on units in construction related and metal trades. Students will learn about safety, tools and trades pathways, as well as developing knowledge and skills involved in the work of tradespeople.

Who:

Grade 10 students

What:

1 Elective course = 4 credits

When:

One course as part of your regular 4-block schedule in one semester

Where:

Brooks Secondary School

Why?

  • Explore multiple construction and mechanical trades through hands‑on projects that build real skills, confidence, and understanding of how tradespeople work.

  • Get an early start on a high‑demand career path by discovering what you enjoy before committing to specialized training in Grade 11 or 12.

  • Learn essential safety, tool use, and trade‑pathway knowledge that prepares you for future programs like Trades Sampler, Youth Work in Trades, or Youth Train in Trades.

What comes after the Skills X Program?

If a student wishes to pursue a trade pathway at the conclusion of the program, they are encouraged to sign up for one of the following:
    • Grade 11 - Trades Sampler program. This is a half-day one-semester program that provides 8 elective credits upon completion.
    • Grade 11/12 - Youth Work in Trades program, which allows students to get paid to work while gaining up to 16 high school course credits (YWRK 11a, 11b, 12a, 12b). Students must be 15 years of age or older.
    • Grade 12 - Youth Train in Trades Dual Credit Trades programs, which run yearlong. Current local offerings are Automotive and Carpentry through VIU, however, students who wish to pursue training outside the district can get sponsored to attend NIC or Camosun programs, such as Welding, Plumbing, or Electrical (and more).

How?

Each student will be required to have steel-toed boots. All PPE will be provided. It is optimal to wear clothes that offer extra protection: Carhart, or similar pants, these are advantageous as they repel debris and are thick for added protection. Long sleeves are always advised, along with extra socks for boots. In the winter, please make sure to bring a jacket, the shop can be chilly, and students may be working outside. If you cannot afford any of the items listed above, please contact the Academic Advisor or Counsellors and we can look to support you.

What is my next step?

Select Skills X as an elective on your course selection sheet.

Oh, and tell a friend, let's make this fun!
