Early Childhood Educator Assistant (ECEA)
Course: ECEC 130 (3) Principles and Practices of Wellness
This is the first course toward a two-year diploma for:
Early Childhood Education and Care Diploma | Vancouver Island University
This Dual Credit course will be offered during a semester at Brooks Secondary School and will be paired with Career Life Connections 12. A certified VIU instructor will offer the Early Childhood Education and Care course. An introduction to the principles and practices of health, safety, effective care routines, and nutrition that promote the wellness of young children. ECEC 130 is the first step towards any career that focuses on working with children. Upon completion, you will be have skills to work at a childcare facility and support the day-to-day operations. Topics include health promotion, appropriate ways of responding to common childhood conditions and child abuse, and the formation of effective partnerships with families as it pertains to wellness.

Students will be able to apply for certification as an Early Childhood Educator Assistant when they successfully complete the program. With the certificate, students can work in daycare settings.
Gain eligibility for ECE Assistant certification upon successful completion, opening the door to real employment opportunities right after high school.
Work in licensed daycare and childcare settings with the certificate, building experience and confidence in a supportive environment.

Apply Now - Review and complete the Dual Credit Application. Gain acceptance into the program.
Meet with Mrs. Ellis, Career Pathways Coordinator, to review information package, application, and requirements.
Pay Fees - This program is valued at over $500. Check the VIU program page for updated fees. qathet School District will cover your tuition. Visit the VIU program page or contact VIU for updated fees.
A $200 deposit is required to secure your spot in the program. Students withdrawing from the program after acceptance will be subject to a $500 withdrawal fee.
Attend class 5 days per week. Not adhering to strict university guidelines will result in withdrawal from the program.
At Brooks Secondary School, students will participate in a combination of Career Life Connections 12 with a Brooks Teacher as well as the core ECEC curriculum with a VIU Instructor.
Assessment will be provided by your VIU instructor according to VIU's reporting period. A final grade will be given on your Brooks Learning Update. Recognizing that university courses expectations can be rigorous, it is strongly recommended that students communicate frequently about their progress with both their VIU Instructor and their Brooks Teacher.

If required, seek IEP, counselling and student supports through the VIU Student Support Team or through the Brooks Career Counselling Office.
